(August 2026) – BIPOC PEEEEEEK is helping strengthen Rochester\u2019s behavioral health system by ensuring the voices and experiences of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color parents and caregivers help shape the services and supports available to their communities.<\/p>

Founded by Sara Taylor, BIPOC PEEEEEEK — Parents and Caregivers Elevating their voices to Educate and Empower Each other to Eliminate disparities and inequities in services related to the Emotional Health of our Kids — uses advocacy, education, and community connection to advance more culturally responsive and equitable mental health care for children and families.<\/p>

The Health Foundation is proud to support BIPOC PEEEEEEK\u2019s community-led work. The organization reflects an approach central to health equity: communities are the experts in identifying their needs and shaping solutions. We are honored that BIPOC PEEEEEEK recognized the Health Foundation with the Lenora Reid-Rose Advancing Mental Health Equity Award at its Mental Health in Communities of Color Symposium in July, 2026. Named in honor of the late Lenora Reid-Rose and her commitment to improving access to care, the award recognizes efforts to advance equitable, culturally responsive mental health care. A Model for Belonging: Rochester Deaf Kitchen's Growing Impact<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

(July 2026) – Rochester Deaf Kitchen has grown into a trusted community resource, operating one of the nation’s first Deaf-led food pantries where American Sign Language is the primary language of communication. The Health Foundation is proud join other partners in supporting the organization as it continues to expand its reach while ensuring Deaf individuals and families can access food in a space where communication comes first and everyone belongs.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

As Rochester Deaf Kitchen continues to grow locally, its impact is being recognized beyond the region. Recently, the National Association of the Deaf, the country\u2019s oldest civil rights organization, honored Rochester Deaf Kitchen with the Knights of the Flying Fingers Award at a ceremony in San Francisco.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

Building on that momentum, RDK will partner with the American School for the Deaf this fall to open Hartford Deaf Kitchen in Connecticut. The new location will be the second Deaf-led food pantry built on RDK’s model, bringing accessible food assistance to more Deaf community members and demonstrating how innovative, community-led solutions can grow to serve communities beyond the Greater Rochester region. Uplifting Community-Led Change in Southern Seneca County<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

(May 2026) – In mid May, community members, partners, and supporters gathered at Cayuga Shoreline in Interlaken to celebrate the completion of Project STEPS (Seneca Towns Engaging People for Solutions) and honor nearly 13 years of resident-led work to strengthen health, connection, and community pride across southern Seneca County.<\/p>

As the final grantee in our Neighborhood Health Status Improvement<\/a> (NHSI) initiative, Project STEPS leaves a lasting legacy in the towns of Covert, Lodi, Ovid, and Romulus.<\/p>

Since launching in 2012, residents have led more than 100 community improvement projects, from gardens and murals to youth programs, transportation solutions, and neighborhood beautification efforts.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Focused on reducing isolation and strengthening connections in rural communities, STEPS helped expand transportation access, improve food security, support downtown revitalization, and foster collaboration across communities that had historically worked separately. Community pride has grown steadily, with resident surveys showing increased engagement and stronger connections among neighboring towns.<\/p>

Most recently, STEPS demonstrated its resilience following the devastating Ovid block fire in January 2025, mobilizing volunteers, donations, and resources to support affected residents and recovery efforts.<\/p>

The culminating celebration recognized the many residents, volunteers, and partners whose commitment has helped create healthier, more connected communities, and a short documentary<\/a> highlighting the initiative was also shown. Their work stands as a powerful example of how long-term investment in local leadership can create lasting change. (April 2026) – Congratulations to Hinge Neighbors on being selected by the City of Rochester as the developer for the City-owned parcel at 125 Charlotte St., following a competitive request for proposals process.<\/p>

Hinge Neighbors will lead the project in partnership with The Housing Council at PathStone, Patrick Tobin LLC, and CJS Architects, focusing on expanding affordable homeownership opportunities in Center City through the construction of 11 townhomes, nine of which include fully accessible, ground-floor accessory dwelling units.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Greater Rochester Health Foundation is proud to have supported the preceding 2022 neighborhood-building initiative that engaged, educated, and activated hard-to-reach community members through a nontraditional, creative campaign. This effort helped residents better understand city planning, neighborhood design, capital construction, operations, place activation, and land use within the Inner Loop removal area. As a result, community-informed solutions have helped shape more equitable approaches to addressing the impacts of the original Inner Loop North construction and its long-standing effects on the health of the neighborhood. (2025) Our partners at Common Ground Health have released the Monroe County Behavioral Health Needs Assessment 2025, offering a timely and comprehensive look at the current behavioral health landscape in our community.<\/p>

Developed through a multipronged research approach, the assessment highlights key areas where increased support and coordination could improve mental health and substance use outcomes across the county. It also emphasizes the importance of both clinical care and community-based services in addressing behavioral health challenges.<\/p>

The report identifies five focus areas for deeper analysis, outlining actionable opportunities to strengthen systems, close gaps, and better meet the needs of residents. As a partner committed to advancing health equity, we\u2019re proud to support Common Ground Health and we are grateful for their leadership in creating this resource alongside the many community voices that informed its development.<\/p>

(March 2026) – The Children’s Agenda and Liftoff WNY have released a new report, Rural Realities: The State of Child Care in Western New York, examining the distinct challenges facing families and providers in rural communities.<\/p>

While recent policy changes have expanded access to child care, the report finds that many rural areas continue to grapple with workforce shortages, limited provider options, enrollment closures, and funding systems that do not always align with local realities.<\/p>

The publication underscores that children in rural communities deserve the same access to high-quality care as their peers in urban and suburban settings and offers recommendations for state and community leaders to strengthen child care infrastructure across Western New York. ROC the Peace provides monthly peer support groups for individuals and youth who have experienced the loss of a loved one due to violence, suicide, overdose, or incarceration. The groups create a safe and compassionate space where participants can share their experiences, connect with others who understand their grief, and receive emotional support. The dedicated Youth for Peace group serves participants ages 5\u201319, offering guided activities with community mentors that help young people process loss while promoting nonviolence and positive community engagement. (May 2025) – At the Greater Rochester Health Foundation, we invest in people and neighborhoods to support lasting health improvements. Launched in 2008, the Neighborhood Health Status Improvement (NHSI) initiative empowers residents in under-resourced communities to lead change, following an Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) approach, which leverages the community’s strengths to address health disparities and foster sustainable transformation.\u00a0<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

The short documentary, Neighborhood Health Status Improvement: Empowering and Transforming Communities highlights three projects: Project HOPE in Northeast Rochester; Project SOAR in Southeast Wayne County; and Project STEPS in South Seneca County. These communities have advanced grassroots efforts like youth leadership, civic engagement, and local entrepreneurship \u2014 showing what\u2019s possible when residents are trusted to lead.<\/p>

With a five-phase model and investments of about $2 million over 11 years per site, NHSI supports long-term sustainability and systems change. (April, 2025) — A Call for Ideas Responsive Grant from the Health Foundation helped 441 Ministries, a Christian nonprofit focused on neighborhood development, expand tenant support in Rochester\u2019s Beechwood neighborhood over the past 18 months.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

Grant funding allowed the part-time Property Manager to dedicate 10 hours weekly to tenant relationships, resource access, and financial literacy. Monthly meetings, guest speakers, and SDOH surveys guided responsive, community-driven programming. Results included 65% tenant meeting participation, job placements, financial assistance, and a Rent Forgiveness Program. Expanded partnerships also boosted access to services.<\/p>

Despite ongoing challenges like financial insecurity and mental health needs, 441 Ministries plans to grow its efforts with enhanced financial literacy, data collection, and tenant engagement. The grant also helped secure $86,488 in additional funding for housing and safety improvements. As New York\u2019s first sober active community,\u00a0<\/span>ROCovery Fitness<\/a>\u00a0supports individuals recovering from substance use disorders through fitness, peer support, and outreach programs, with a focus on marginalized communities. Founded in 1991, the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Rochester Spinal Association<\/a>\u00a0enhances the lives of individuals with spinal cord disabilities through advocacy, peer support, and programs that promote accessibility, health, and independence.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

ROCovery Fitness and Rochester Spinal Association teams recently met at one of our grantee orientations and through this connection, Chris Hilderbrant visited the ROCovery center for a tour, which led to the purchase of equipment to improve bathroom accessibility, the addition of an RSA member to ROCovery\u2019s DEIB Committee, and the planning of joint workouts with the RSA Basketball and Rugby Teams. Program Officers Rachel Betts and Hannah Castelli had the opportunity to see the connection in person!<\/span><\/p>

Created to increase equity in philanthropy for women of color leading local nonprofits, the graduates pictured are part of the second cohort to complete the program. To date, both cohorts have secured a total of $500,000 in funding for their organizations!<\/p>

(January, 2025) — Thanks to our grantee partner BreatheDeep<\/span><\/a><\/span>, trauma frontline works in Rochester now have a dedicated space to heal and recharge. On Thursday, Jan. 23, BreatheDeep, Inc., and Greater Rochester Health Foundation unveiled Project Restore: The Respite Place. This program supports workers in high-stress roles, such as mental health professionals, crisis counselors, and victim support specialists, who face secondary trauma daily.<\/div>

The Respite Place, a cornerstone of Project Restore, offers a tranquil environment where frontline workers\u2014such as mental health professionals, crisis counselors, and victim support specialists\u2014can rejuvenate. The newly-renovated space features a sauna, massage chair, dine-in kitchen, and a creative living area for relaxation. Beyond the physical space, Project Restore provides a range of holistic wellness services, including free mental health counseling, restorative day stays, life coaching, and personalized fitness and nutrition plans.<\/div>

Through the addition of a Rural Community Health Coordinator, supported by the Health Foundation, Happiness House aims to support rural families by improving access to critical services, addressing social drivers of health, and empowering families to advocate for their children\u2019s educational, social, and health outcomes. The coordinator will work with communities served at their two preschool program sites located in Geneva and Canandaigua to provide an additional layer of support to students and their families and improve health outcomes.<\/div>

(November, 2024) — The Genesee-Orleans Ministry of Concern, under the leadership of Director Jami Allport, has intensified its efforts to address homelessness in Orleans County with the help of a two-year grant from the Greater Rochester Health Foundation. Their outreach efforts were recently featured in orleanshub.com<\/a>.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

The funding enabled the hiring of Warren Harding, a retired police officer, as Homeless Outreach Coordinator, who now seeks out and engages with the homeless population. The grant also supports the year-round use of Point in Time surveys to gather critical data and provides waterproof backpacks filled with essential items like blankets, meals, and hygiene supplies for those in need.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

\u201cPeople think homelessness is only a city issue, but it\u2019s here in rural areas, too,\u201d said Allport. The Ministry is also seeking volunteers to assist with outreach and plans to hold informational workshops to educate the community about local homelessness. Dundee Fresh Grocery Brings Healthy Food Access Back to Yates County\u200b<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

When Dundee\u2019s only grocery store closed in 2019, residents were left traveling miles for fresh food \u2014 a challenge made even harder by the COVID-19 pandemic. Today, thanks to local determination and strong partnerships, Dundee Fresh Grocery is restoring access to healthy food and creating a new community hub.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

Greater Rochester Health Foundation supported this work with funding for surveys, a market study, and a $560,000 grant to help launch the store. With fresh produce, dairy, meats, and baked goods now back in the village \u2014 along with a deli and gathering space \u2014 Dundee Fresh shows how community leadership can drive lasting solutions for health equity.<\/span><\/p>

YAP, a national nonprofit, offers alternatives to youth incarceration and out-of-home placements by providing individualized, wraparound support.<\/span><\/span><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

In 2023, Wayne County YAP made significant strides, including launching a sailing program, organizing team-building excursions, and hosting a basketball clinic with street basketball star Larry “Bone Collector” Williams.\u00a0<\/p>

Founded in 2016, the project provides direct support for women experiencing Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders (PMADs), offers basic needs like diapers and formula, and connects caregivers with mental health services.\u00a0<\/p>

In 2023, Project Stork expanded its efforts, supporting over 150 caregivers with monthly benefits and peer support, underscoring their commitment to fostering healthier, happier families through continuous adaptation and growth. Our rural and agricultural communities are vital to our state, and since 2021, the Health Foundation has supported the<\/span> United Way of Orleans County<\/u><\/a> (UWOC) in addressing pandemic-related challenges by strengthening community collaboration, grant-seeking, and fundraising efforts.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/div>
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>
This initiative has significantly enhanced nonprofit capacity, leading to successful grant writing, collaborative program management, and community engagement, particularly around housing issues. A subgroup focusing on homeless housing developed a model of unprecedented collaboration, now central to the “Orleans County Housing Action Strategy,” which aims to increase housing availability and improve conditions for low- and moderate-income households.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>

UWOC\u2019s human-centered design approach has energized the nonprofit sector, faith community, and local government, supporting over 25 nonprofits and fostering sustainable community development. Bivona Child Advocacy Center Marks Child Abuse Prevention Month With Major Announcement!<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

(April, 2024) — April is Child Abuse Prevention Month and Bivona Child Advocacy Center<\/a><\/strong><\/span> has announced a second location and expanded services for the community!<\/p>

The new location in Irondequoit is set to open in the fall of 2024. Services will include community education for school districts and will grow to include new mental health services for survivors and families along with trainings specifically for parents at high risk of abuse and neglect.\u00a0<\/p>

(March, 2024) — Thank you to the United Way of Orleans County<\/strong><\/span><\/a>\u00a0for inviting Program Officers Hannah Castelli and Rachel Betts to attend the recent Friendraising Event at the historic\u00a0Bent’s Opera House\u00a0in celebration of 60 years of service!<\/p>

Since 2021, the Health Foundation has supported the United Way of Orleans following the merger with five other rural United Ways completed to strengthen their ability to respond to additional hardships that the COVID pandemic had created for them and for their community partners. This collaboration seeks the resources and expertise to support community collaborations, collaborative grant seeking and development of community wide fund-raising events within the United Way and local community-based organizations to increase resources within the region.<\/p>

(February, 2024) — The University of Rochester Medical Center has announced a first-of-its-kind initiative to improve health care access and wellness outcomes in rural communities in Upstate New York through the distribution of telehealth stations conveniently located at local bank branches. Woven into the fabric of rural towns, banks offer the ideal physical location to bridge the geographic divide between patients and providers, offering a vital touchpoint to reach an underserved population.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

The stations will be set up in private, enclosed spaces at the Five Star Bank branches in Bath, Ovid; and Wayland and will be able to measure indicators for risk for high blood pressure, obesity, Type 2 diabetes, heart attack and stroke. Users will be able to connect with UR Medicine providers virtually.<\/p>

Greater Rochester Health Foundation is proud to support this innovative effort to improve healthcare access in rural communities.<\/p>

(February, 2024) – Health Affairs recently featured a case study of Lifespan of Greater Rochester Inc.\u2019s<\/a> Community Care Connections program and how it\u2019s implementing a new Medicare policy designed to create more integrated care teams that provide patients with comprehensive, whole-person care leading to improved health equity, better health outcomes, and much-needed support for caregivers.<\/p>

\u201cSince 2016, Lifespan of Greater Rochester has been testing an integrated, whole-person care model through the implementation of the Community Care Connections (CCC) program, which provides services for older adults with complex social and medical needs. CCC employs social work case managers and licensed practical nurse health care coordinators to provide clients and caregivers with individually tailored and holistic services to address a range of social needs, as well as support coordinating and navigating their medical care.\u201d<\/p>

(November, 2023) – After more than an year of planning, a listening tour, and gathering information and interviews, the Indigenous Health Coalition held their inaugural meeting in November of 2023.<\/p><\/div>

Led by a small group of local Indigenous advocates, the coalition is open to and inclusive of any Indigenous people in the region and aims to ensure Indigenous health equity in its work, with support from Common Ground Health<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, the region’s health planning organization.<\/p>

This \u201cMini Me Mart\u201d serves as a vital career training ground as student-employees test, market, and ultimately complete sales to support the mission. During this process, they develop the \u201csocial\/emotional\u201d and business skills needed to become valued employees in the workforce and contributing citizens in their community.<\/div>

To date, over $125,000 in products have been sold; from pasta, sauce, smoothie, mask, and puppet sales. Equitable Vaccine Distribution - Finger Lakes Vaccination Program<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

When the much-anticipated COVID vaccine arrived in the United States in early 2021, along with a renewed sense of optimism, the Governor promptly tasked the Finger Lakes Region with vaccinating 1.2 million people. In response, the Finger Lakes COVID-19 Vaccine Hub<\/a> was formed to implement a comprehensive vaccination plan for the region.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

The Finger Lakes COVID-19 Vaccine Hub collaborated with health departments, health care providers, community partners in Genesee, Livingston, Monroe, Orleans, Ontario, Seneca, Wayne, Wyoming and Yates Counties, with Common Ground Health<\/a>, the region\u2019s health research and planning organization, and with an advisory task force of 80 regional leaders. Hub partners collaborated to develop the Finger Lakes Vaccination Program, with a mission of ensuring the equitable, transparent, and efficient immunization of at least 70% of the adult residents of the Finger Lakes Region. Organized by the United Way of Greater Rochester and the Finger Lakes<\/a>, in a matter of weeks the program secured nearly $1M in philanthropic funds from partners at Paychex, ESL Charitable Foundation, the Konar Foundation, Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Foundation and Greater Rochester Health Foundation.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

This unprecedented collaboration of public and private organizations has enabled large gains in vaccination rates in our region. When the work began, 31.5% of the population had received at least one dose of the vaccination, while today, more than 70% of the population has received a complete vaccine series. Through efforts coordinated by the Finger Lakes Vaccination Program and supported by philanthropic funds, 362 clinics were operated between April and September 2021, resulting in vaccination of over 33,000 individuals.\u00a0<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

With a central charge of equity in vaccine distribution, the program contributed to large increases in vaccination rates within the zip codes and populations most impacted by COVID and with least access to the vaccine.<\/p>

To achieve these outcomes there were many obstacles that needed to be surmounted including the barrage of misinformation about COVID vaccines, mistrust resulting from histories of racism in medical institutions, as well as transportation, language and other access barriers disproportionately impacting lower-income urban as well as rural areas in our region. The Finger Lakes Vaccination Program developed and executed numerous strategies to address these barriers, including engaging in outreach and trust building in underserved communities, providing locally and culturally-tailored information and communications, and supporting vaccine administration within accessible, trusted community settings.<\/p><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Fundamental to our Healthy and Equitable Futures<\/a> work is the value of sharing, ceding, and leveraging power. Recognizing the importance of shifting power to families, the Health Foundation partnered with the National Parent Leadership Training Institute<\/a> to build upon and leverage previous work to create a stakeholder learning collaborative and serve as a backbone for parent leadership and facilitation. A monthly Learning Collaborative launched virtually in 2021 during the COVID pandemic, is supported by more than 100 strategy partners, half of which are parents, including parents on 12 child-serving organization teams. With the support of 15 Parent Leader Facilitators and Soulstainable Living<\/a> as DEI (diversity, equity, inclusion) consultant, stakeholders work to build and advance capacity in family leadership; racial diversity, equity, and inclusion; and social-emotional supports and connection so that Black and Latinx children ages zero to 8 in Monroe County are safe, supported, and thriving.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

The Learning Collaborative serves as a mechanism to support organization and systems change efforts, and to address power inequities and advance racial justice. Organizations are working to leverage their strengths and their learnings to make policy and practice changes. The early learnings from this work have elevated the importance of parent voice in systems change, developing relationships within organizational teams so parents can meaningfully contribute, and creating space in the Learning Collaborative to discuss equity in systems change.<\/p>

Out of a desire to teach kids real-world life skills and provide tools to propel them to success, a new, Rochester-based non-profit is using video games, mentoring, education, and sports to help ensure that each child in their program will become a productive citizen who will make an enduring impact on their community.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

We Are 1 is a strategic, \u201caction-only movement\u201d specifically designed to empower Black men, women, and children. Having adopted a universal code of unity, the organization\u2019s efforts are \u201cvoid of manipulation, jealousy, envy, anger, disgust, harm, and fear of one another.\u201d We Are 1 engages in a structured, comprehensive series of approaches that allow Black people \u2014 as a whole \u2014 to gain control of their community by simultaneously supporting all areas of community members\u2019 lives and well-being, as opposed to providing siloed services.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

We Are 1\u2019s face-to-face community engagement method brings an individual\u2019s or a family\u2019s resource needs directly to their doorstep. This approach has proven to be an effective tool for building genuine relationships with the community and fostering trust. Participating youth are trained to connect with residents in their neighborhood and collect information to help identify needs. In turn, this information informs the coordination and linkage to critical services including housing, food assistance, home maintenance, health care and other basic needs.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

We Are 1 leverages a range of partnerships in the community, including: Rochester Housing Charities; Macy\u2019s Department Store; Skate Luvers Roller Palace; Toastmasters International; and a behavioral health specialist from Monroe County.<\/p>

The Health Foundation\u2019s investment in the work of We Are 1 has proven to be imperative and impactful in 2021 as they reached nearly 2,000 community members \u2014 serving hot meals and distributing food to hundreds more through their Grill and Chill Community Cookouts and Lunch Da Block activities. In addition, more than 120 youth took part in boot camp and mentoring programs and benefitted from in-school supports and services in several local schools.<\/p><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

People born outside the U.S. make up a vital part of the fabric of our communities, heavily contributing to the number of essential workers and those whose jobs support critical food and supply chains throughout the entire Finger Lakes Region.<\/p>

The latest U.S. Census data estimates the foreign-born population in Monroe County at around 67,000. That\u2019s nearly one in 10 county residents, with around two-thirds being U.S. citizens and two-thirds having been in the country for more than 10 years.\u00a0<\/p>

Whether documented or not \u2014 this community is more likely to suffer adverse health outcomes linked with inequities. New Americans often contend with the burden of xenophobia as well as racial and economic bias.\u00a0<\/p>

These multiple layers of oppression can increase their social, emotional, and physical health vulnerabilities \u2014 making immigration status itself a social determinant of health. While much work is needed to dismantle the systems and social constructs that fuel this discrimination, the Immigrants\u2019 Rights Program, created by Just Cause<\/a> (formerly Volunteer Legal Services of Monroe, Inc.), seeks to interrupt the cycles that\u00a0 perpetuate these inequities while ensuring the safety, health, and civil rights of children and families who have immigrated to the U.S.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Access to legal supports, linkages to supportive services, and\u00a0preventive medical care can reduce the impact of isolation,\u00a0challenge illegal workforce practices, and facilitate integration\u00a0with the larger community. The program addresses multiple\u00a0social determinants of health around housing, domestic violence\u00a0protections, and health care services for a population that can\u00a0be greatly marginalized by language barriers, transportation\u00a0barriers, and fear regarding status.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The Greater Rochester Health Foundation\u2019s investment in this\u00a0program supports key components such as: staffing, supplies,\u00a0and court fees to ensure that attorneys, staff, and volunteers have\u00a0what they need to provide these important services. Through\u00a0the Immigrants\u2019 Rights Program, more than 1,000 individuals,\u00a0<\/span>families, and children benefited from legal education, direct legal\u00a0representation, or legal counseling in 2021. Healthy communities that thrive are built on many factors, one of which is access to healthy food. Geneva, New York has been identified by the U.S. Department of Agriculture as a designated Food Scarcity Zone. Like too many of our communities, the limited number of grocery stores and the subsequent closing of small chain markets during the pandemic left many community members without access to a full range of healthy food options.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Yet, when communities collaborate, abundance can be created. BluePrint Geneva<\/a>, Inc. began its journey as a nonprofit in 2016 with the goal of capitalizing on the bountiful agricultural enterprise in the area to increase food access and affordability for under-resourced neighborhoods and community members within the City of Geneva.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

In 2020, they began to partner with local farmers such as Schrader\u2019s, a woman-owned butchery, to establish a meat co-operative that would improve the\u00a0 community\u2019s access to high-quality, affordable meat and other products. Through this innovative co-op, BluePrint Geneva successfully launched the Healthy Food Direct project in March of 2021. Within\u00a0nine months, the project had served more than 130 unique households and completed hundreds of deliveries. The collaborating partners continue to grow, as do the types of fresh and reduced-price foods they provide to the community.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The Greater Rochester Health Foundation\u2019s grant was awarded\u00a0to support core project components and startup needs. It is often\u00a0the basics, such as EBT access technology and cold storage unit\u00a0purchases that impede grassroots organizations from furthering\u00a0their critical work. Supported by the Health Foundation\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>investment and fueled by deep knowledge of the community,\u00a0BluePrint staff and volunteers, farmers, and other partners are\u00a0working to expand the food options and reach of the co-op to\u00a0increase healthy and affordable food access in Geneva.\u00a0<\/p><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
